In Detail
- Climate Ventures: A business, lifestyle, system etc. that is good for the climate, economy and humanity. Each Climate Venture has at its core at least one Target Action.
The Climate Venture Map was developed to help everyone understand climate ventures. The Climate Venture Map is basically a business model canvas developed especially to result in business models and lifestyles that are good for the climate, economy, and humanity.

When you look at the CVM:
- Start with the green “Vision” and “Target Action” and how it is good for the climate, economy and humanity. Then pop over to the “Problem Action,” and why it’s bad for the climate, economy and humanity. The goal of our behavior change is to open up that funnel on the right, where instead of using everything up and causing pollution, we’re using less and able to sustain life on Earth. So while the “funnel” on the left is currently closing, with our target action we’re going to reopen the funnel on the right.
- To get through the tunnel from the problem action to the target action, we have to identify our target group, behavior triggers, abilities and motivations, and our ideal group.
- Then we determine our priorities, inflows and outflows, and make sure we have the help and resources we need to cause the change.
- Execute. Carry out your plan! Share it with others.
A great way to run through the climate venture map is with a mind map. A downloadable template (a “.mind” file) for building a Climate Venture Map using MindMeister is available at this link. You can set up a free account on www.mindmeister.com for up to three mind maps. When you log into your new account, upload the Climate Venture Map Template. Start with the Vision, hit tab and enter your vision. Then go to Target Action, hit tab and enter your target action, etc., through all the steps. Every time you hit tab on a node you add a new subitem for that node. You can move nodes; make sure you select “free” format instead of right-aligned or other choices. A full description and study guide including steps for using the Climate Venture Map is available at https://theclimateeconomy.com/the-climate-venture-map/.
Climate ventures can be small businesses or community projects that can be replicated from community to community, depending on your community size, strengths and weaknesses. Climate ventures can be listed on the Exchange in order to get more people involved or share the ideas with other communities who can take up the idea in their location and run with it. Some climate ventures may have the traditional business needs such as to protect intellectual property, but for the most part we want to encourage spreading the business models and lifestyles of climate ventures as much as possible. Each climate venture has at least one target action.
- Target Actions: People- and nature-centered human behaviors that result in learning about or actually carrying out emissions reductions, improving community resilience, becoming a more engaged citizen or helping those in need. They could also be about creating something new that will accomplish the same goals. Target Actions are the products and services of Climate Ventures. They can be measured, tracked and rewarded in various ways.
